HOPES (Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability) works to promote a deeper understanding and broader application of sustainable design principles. It is presented annually by the Ecological Design Center on the University of Oregon campus. Samuel Mockbee, Sim Van der Ryn, James Hubbel, Angela Danadijieva, Michael Pyatok, Steve Badanes, Richard Register, David Orr, John Schaeffer and Clare Cooper Marcus are all past keynote speakers.

The theme of HOPES 2006 is "Permanence/Impermanence" and the conference will address the many approaches to sustainability in the 21st century. The professional opportunities for learning, networking, and knowledge sharing will also be extensive. ALSA, AIA and APA credits are available, as is academic credit through the University of Oregon. In addition to dozens of panel discussions and hands-on workshops relating to sustainable design, HOPES has the honor of presenting keynotes from: CHRISTINE MACY and SARAH BONNEMAISON, of the research-based design partnership Filum; Permaculture Institute founder PENNY LIVINGSTON; and architect and professor SERGIO PALLERONI, winner of an AIA National Education Award. HOPES will also include a Green Building Expo, Professional Showcase, 24-Hour Design Charrette, Speakers Dinner, and kidsHOPES activities.
