Environmental Writing: A Spiritual Voice of Resistance

“Everyone of us is a crossroads of thousands of relations, links, influences, and communications – physical, chemical, biological, and others of which we know nothing…None of us knows how the quiver of a shrub in California affects the mental state of a coal miner in North Bohemia or how his mental state affects the quivering of the shrub” (Havel 15).

Spreading Roots, Spring Forth: Currently Looking for Board Members

Submitted by SRSF on Thu, 05/25/2006 - 10:01.

Do you become excited by the complex diversity of the natural world, of plants, of animals? Do you find yourself interested in the connection between natural and social systems? Do you want to become more involved in the non-profit world or with an environmentally focused organization?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above there may be a place for you on the board or in the volunteer section of Spreading Roots, Spring Forth (or SRSF). We are a small non-profit whose mission is to strengthen the connections between people and their environment. We have been publishing an email based weekly event listing for over five years now titled "The Dirt!", (*see more below*). However, SRSF, the parent organization of The Dirt! is new and is in need of board members to expand it's potential. Come join us and gain valuable experience as a board member or volunteer and learn from others interested in common interests while working for sustainability in the Portland metro. area.

If you are interested in serving on the board or as a volunteer of Spreading Roots, Spring Forth and becoming part of an exciting new adventure in the move to a sustainable board and organization, then please contact Zeratha at zeratha @ spreadingroots.org for more information and/or to get an application.

Embracing Permaculture Principles and Learning to Listen

Achieving sustainable development is the most important challenge facing all humans on this planet today.  Collectively we are living in a very unsustainable manner.  There are so many factors involved that we need to attempt to approach the situation from all angles; from a whole systems approach.  This means considering the economic factors, the cultural and societal factors, the political factors, the environmental factors, and of course present and future human needs.

Special Thanks This Week Go Out To My Fellow SRSF Board Members

Submitted by SRSF on Sat, 05/20/2006 - 08:16.

SPECIAL THANKS THIS WEEK go out to my fellow SRSF Board Members:

**Jeremy O'Leary** who helped greatly in the compiling of this week's issue by developing a new process to import a large number events all at once for The Dirt! website so that finally we can adequately represent all the richness that VBC brings with it each year.

**Zeratha Young** who overnight greatly upped the food for thought, and overall educational content to be currently found on our site as well including the addition of more of her beautiful poetry to wind and weave words into beauty.

Thank You Jeremy!! Thank You Zeratha!! You both have made a dream come true!!! - LBN

Ode to the VBC

                                                       Ode to the VBC

The first law of thermodynamics states: “In all physical and chemical changes energy is neither created nor destroyed, but may be converted from one form to another.”
This is a great fundamental universal law to keep in mind as we go through our daily lives. It serves to remind us how connected we all are, from the daddy long legs crawling up the patio stairs to the freshly planted sunflower. It also serves to remind that what we do to the natural world around us and what we throw away does not just “go away”.  The atoms holding you and I together come from an infiinite variety of sources and are recycled over and over...Your form has been here forever. Wow, how smart you must be!  In honor of all this miraculous energy and potential and in honor of the upcoming Village Building Convergence:

In the heart of this space
skin of stars, eye of dinsoaur
beating and pulsing
atoms of yesterday
moons of tomorrow
the promise of a sustainable future

Remembering how to live as villagers
we mix amongst the tentacles, feathers and scales of life
learning how to balance and reciprocate
breathing in and letting go
old paradigms and constructs
in with the new and out with the old

It is time, it is time

to celebrate, to grow
this is a precious time
between you and I
between the space of possibility, inspiration and action
we are birthing together
this new reality
let us converge
and build this new village
