Free showing of the Oaks Bottom documentary "Riparian" by Diana Cvitanovich on December 8th at 7:00 p.m. at the SMILE Station in Sellwood.

Created while she was a PSU graduate student, Cvitanovich’s film provides a fascinating history of early environmentalism and the efforts by members of the Sellwood-Moreland Improvement League (SMILE), Audubon Society, and others to preserve Oaks Bottom, the last large wetland on the Willamette River.

Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge is the best place in town to view birds, take walks or just contemplate.  Join us as we make it an even nicer place to see.  We will be putting in trees and shrubs to attractive more animals and people to the site.  We are looking for enthusiastic and fun loving people to help - yes, we need you!

Join Urban Naturalist Mike Houck for a paddle around Ross Island, soon be the City of Portland’s newest natural area park.  The trip will cross the Willamette River and circumnavigate around Hardtack and East Islands, and downstream along the quiet Holgate Channel.  From there we’ll paddle into the Ross Island lagoon to look for Bald Eagles.  You are responsible for bringing and maintaining your own kayak/canoe.  Canoe and kayak rentals can be arranged through Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe (www.aldercreek.com, 503-285-0464) or Portland Kayak Company (www.portlandrivercompany.com, 503-459-4050).  Life jackets are absolutely required.  Directions and other details will be emailed to registrants.

Plant native trees and shrubs to enhance city natural area park.  Pre-registration requested; please call or email for details and directions.  Volunteers must bring their own gloves and shovels.  Wear boots or sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and plan on getting muddy. Volunteers must be physically capable of traversing uneven terrain in all weather conditions.  Planting requires lifting, digging and kneeling.  No experience necessary.  Training provided on-site.  Great for groups.

Join Urban Water Works, Bridger Elementary School and the Creative Sciences School for a planting work-party. Learn about native plants and be a part of the amazing transformation taking place in this schoolyard as water is diverted from rooftops into the rainwater garden. Parents, students, teachers, community members and professionals have been working together for the past year to make this project happen. And now you can join in!
