The first planting of the Friends of Trees 2006-07 planting season is at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge on Sat., Oct., 14, and the first neighborhood planting in Portland is in the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood on Nov. 11. Friends of Trees will host its first Fun Run for Restoration, a 5-mile run and 3.5-mile walk, on Sunday, Oct. 8th, beginning at Oaks Amusement Park, 7100 Oaks Park Way. Registration is at 8:30am., the run starts at 9am. The Fun Run for Restoration is sponsored by the Nike Factory Store.
Training is free, but pre-registration is required. Call 503-282-8846 ext. 12.
Friends of Trees is expanding its core group of key volunteers by offering leadership trainings on Nov. 4 and 11. Local experts and Friends of Trees staff will educate volunteers about city trees, local ecosystems, proper tree planting techniques, plant accessorizing, and volunteer leadership. Trained crew leaders will guide other volunteers during weekend tree-plantings and restoration events between Nov. 2006 and March 2007.

Join the Portland Water Bureau and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council for Groundwater 201 – a FREE educational workshop and tour that will explore the mysteries of groundwater. After years of teaching Groundwater 101 to the public, we are pleased to offer a more in-depth class on our local groundwater source. In addition to talking about local hydrology and geology, we will talk about how models can be used to show us where groundwater can be found and how water moves underground as well as how modeling can help us protect groundwater.
