See comment below for more details.
phone: Senator Gordon Smith 202-224-3121

3-17-05 VOTE AGAINST DRILLING IN ARTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

phone: Senator Gordon Smith 202-224-3121 OSPIRG's website: http://savethearctic.com/arctic.asp?id=42&id4=ES John Kerry's website: http://www.johnkerry.com/RollCall
  • Basically, a Senate spending bill has a provision attached to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This is one of the last protected arctic areas in the world, home to the Gwich'in people and the world's largest remaining caribou herd whose calving grounds are ready to be sacrificed for six month's oil supply that will take a decade to reach market. Over 2 million Americans have repeatedly indicated their opposition to these repeated efforts to devastate this natural wonder, by guys who never set foot upon these areas but choose to assess exploitive potential so they can slop the intoxicating elixir of power from the public trough.
  • It's not too late to save the precious wildlife species that have relied on the Refuge for centuries: 135 bird species from four continents, muskoxen, wolverines, grizzly and polar bears...and the famous Porcupine caribou herd that relies on the area for its essential calving grounds.
  • In the last 24 hours we have seen an amazing display of our johnkerry.com community's ability to quickly mobilize - and a passionate outpouring of commitment to the Arctic Refuge. So far, a quarter of a million citizens - more than 260,000 people, have signed our Citizens' Roll Call in support of the Cantwell-Kerry Amendment to prevent the oil drills from invading one of our greatest natural treasures. And you got the attention of the Republicans too. In fact late last night Republican leaders came to the floor of the Senate to complain directly about our Citizens' Roll Call to stop this special interest giveaway. A vote is expected around 1:00 PM EST and floor debate begins at 10:15 AM EST. Call, sign the online petition, tune in and watch live on C-SPAN2.

Arctic Refuge Vote

Gordon Smith voted the right way, but the Hawaiian senators have some 'splaining to do. Inouye contended his vote was to support the wishes of the native people. Hey, Daniel, have you ever heard of the Gwich'in tribe? Known as the caribou people, they are not excited about having their main food source endangered by a bunch of unneeded oil industry infrastructure and seismic waves to unearth a little black gold. Very disappointing. But we knew it was coming. Despite Cantwell's great amendment and support, there are too many people in Congress who don't respect places which should be inviolate. Still, we will continue the fight.

Please call Senator Smith to protect Arctic Refuge

Please call Senator Smith of Oregon: (202) 224-3753 or (503) 326-3386

Thank him for voting to continue to protect the fragile Arctic Refuge coastline from drilling and ask him to continue to uphold those wilderness values through the next upcoming budget vote in the senate. Thanks! David

P.S. If you are reading this message and in another state altogether, these links will help you find out who your senator is and how they have voted so far on this issue.

Contact Your Elected Officials Today about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge As part of their efforts to reach agreement this week on a final budget resolution, Congressional negotiators may be making a final decision about whether to include a measure to permit oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one of our nation's greatest wildlife sanctuaries. Drilling in the refuge would ruin one of our last great places for relatively little oil that wouldn't be available for ten years or more. Moreover, drilling in the Arctic Refuge has nothing to do with the federal budget and the resolution should not be used to advance this failed and discredited proposal. Please go to the Defenders ENvironmental Action Center to send your Senator and U.S. Representative a fax TODAY urging him/her to OPPOSE efforts to use the federal budget resolution to open the Arctic Refuge to drilling. Better yet, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to speak with your Senator's or U.S. Representative's office too (see suggested talking points below). Thank you for your continued support of the Arctic Refuge.
Sincerely,
Robert Dewey
Vice President, Government Relations

Talking Points:

* My Senator/U.S. Representative should OPPOSE the federal budget resolution if it includes drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
* The Arctic Refuge is one of our nation's greatest wildlife sanctuaries.
* Back-door schemes don't change the basic facts: Drilling in the refuge will ruin one of our last great wild places, for what the U.S. Geological Survey estimates is less oil than the United States uses in a year and it would not even get here for 10 years or more.
* Drilling in the refuge has nothing to do with the federal budget, and this issue shouldn't be decided in the budget resolution.
