September 30 - October 1, 10am to 4pm, with Ernie Wisner

Rocket stoves use easily accessible reused materials and cutting-edge engineering to burn wood super-efficiently and cleanly. Using a renewable resource without the pollution so common to woodstoves, rocket stoves can be used to heat a thermal mass that releases its warmth slowly over time. This allows nearly all the energy from the exhaust to be absorbed as it runs along an extended pipe right through the heavy, heat-absorbing material, leaving relatively cool air to exit the chimney.

This technology can be used inside or outside; in this two-day workshop, we'll create a heated cob bench in an out-of-doors covered environment, perfect for creating usable space for the chilly winter months. In the workshop you will gain both a theoretical and hands-on understanding of the principles and practices of rocket stove construction.

Instructor Ernie Wisner has worked with Ianto Evans and the Cob Cottage Company for many years prototyping and testing rocket stoves of all kinds. Ernie recently experienced a devastating accident during the Village Building Convergence, in which a driver lost control and smashed Ernie's leg into the bench he was building. Proceeds from this workshop will help Ernie continue his incredibly valuable research, partially incapacitated as he remains.
