Carfree Weekend Kicks Off Effort to Close Downtown Street to Auto Traffic

What: Portland Carfree Days 2006
When:  Friday, September 22nd through Sunday, September 24th
Where: SW Ankeny between 2nd and 3rd Avenues

Why: This street closure and community festival heralds an effort to permanently convert this narrow, one-way street into a European-style public plaza. The festival will demonstrate that car-free streets are good for community and good for business.

A coalition of transportation activists and local business owners envision this segment of SW Ankeny as the key first step to creating a dynamic, pedestrian-oriented corridor between the waterfront and downtown Portland.

Schedule of Events:

Day one: Friday night, 4:30pm to 7:30pm will feature "Mocktails on the Street" brought to you by the Breakfast on the Bridges folks. We'll have free food and drinks, free information about local transportation options, and Trimet bike rack demonstrations.

Day two: On Saturday from 11am to 4pm, free bicycle repair services by the Community Cycle Exchange. We'll have a bicycle decorating table and puppets geared toward kids. From 4pm to 10pm, we will have live music, including square dancing, several funky local acts, and featuring the Twenty Foot Man, a giant dancing, singing, painting, poetry-writing marionette.

Day three: Come by SW Ankeny on Sunday at 10am to tune into This American Life on NPR. City Repair's tea-bike will provide seating, free tea, acoustic music, and community from 1pm to 6pm.

All Carfree Days events are free and open to the public. Rain or shine!

Who: Shift, a part of the City Repair Project and a member organization of the World Carfree Network, in partnership with localbusinesses.
