Please join us for a Pesticide-Free workparty at Sewallcrest Park

Last month we celebrated that the Pesticide Free Parks program has been happening for 2 years so far. We still have one more year to go on the 3 year trial period, before Portland Parks and Rec is considering adding more neighborhood parks. There is definitely a great deal of interest and support to eliminate herbicides throughout parks, cities and watersheds.

Sewallcrest Park is in good shape thanks to the work that volunteers did last month and all year long (hard work equals prevention!). Lets hope that we can get lots done and keep the park looking good again this month, before winter comes.  Please join us because we are having another fun work party at SewallCrest Park on Sunday November 5 from 10 am -12 noon.

Sewallcrest Park is at SE 31st & Market.

We'll be pulling weeds and other small jobs to keep the park looking great.

Snacks and hot drinks will be provided. Gloves and tools will be provided, but you can bring your own if you prefer. Bring clothes that can get dirty and that are appropriate for the weather.

Thank you for your interest in Portland Pesticide Free Parks. We'd love to have your help. Please invite some of your friends to come along too!

Please RSVP by contacting Caran at 503-777-5980 or email her at carangoodall@comcast.net  No RSVP is needed  --just show up for any or all of the morning. We look forward to working with you.

Here is some of the history of the pesticide free parks: Portland Parks and Recreation and the Pesticide Free Partners launched a Pesticide Free Parks pilot program in three Portland Parks; Sewallcrest Park (SE 31st & Market), Arbor Lodge (N Bryant & Delaware) and Lair Hill (SW 2nd & Woods).

Since the fall of 2004, no pesticides have been used at these parks. Volunteers, Parks staff, and the Partners have been holding monthly work parties to keep the parks up to maintenance standards. The largest task is weeding the park's open areas, like those around trees, structures and sidewalks. Volunteers are needed for monthly work parties, which take place at Sewallcrest every first Sunday of the month from 10am to noon. For information on the other parks go to www.pesticide.org.

Together, with neighborhood support, we can work to stop the unintentional impacts to our community from the use of pesticides for the health and well being of people, especially children, pets, wildlife and waterways. The Pesticide-Free Parks Program aims to also educate community members about pesticide-free alternatives.

Pesticide Free Partners include; the Northwest Coalition to Alternatives to Pesticides, Willamette Riverkeeper, Salmon Safe, Oregon Sierra Club, Portland Audubon Society, the Oregon Center for Environmental Health and others.
