Douglas County Earth Day Celebration - http://www.co.douglas.or.us/recycle/earthday06.htm
BLM, Roseburg District will participate. Call Joe Ross at 541-440-4930 to assist. The Bureau of Land Management will have a large, interactive display at the Douglas County Earth Day and Energy Fair in Roseburg, Oregon to allow 3,500 participants to gain appreciation for energy sources (solar, hydro, nuclear, wind, oil, gas, coal, etc.), importance of public lands in meeting energy needs, and greater understanding of energy use around the world. Spinning a large game wheel, a child would "select" a country ranging from Ethiopia (with 26 kilowatt hours per person per year of electricity use) up to Iceland with nearly 27,000 kwH used per person. After discussion about geography, resources, and energy use there, the participant picks weighted boxes representing appliances and their relative energy consumption. BLM staff weigh the selected boxes to see how close a person would come to the average energy use in that country. Throughout the day, energy conservation was emphasized as everyone's responsibility. BLM's Roseburg District will also give away tons of posters, reprints from "Science and Children," and information about volunteerism.
