Mary Paetzel was a self-taught botanist, lepidopterist, and solitary
wasp expert – an extraordinary naturalist. She roamed the Siskiyou
Mountains of southwest Oregon for more than 50 years. By visiting
five locations special to Mary, each to be visited this growing
season, participants will explore a cross section of the natural
wonders held in the mountains surrounding the Rogue Valley.
Lee Webb, Mary’s friend, will lead the course. Other botanist and
insect “field” friends of Mary’s will participate. Except for the first
two hours of Class 1,when Lee will show images of Mary and her
artwork, classes will be in the field, exploring the site, discussing
Mary's writings, and sharing favorite readings.

Bigelow Lakes reminded Mary of SW Colorado,
where she spent her early childhood.
Following this late afternoon hike, watch the
sunset at Mt Elijah and walk out on the trail
after dark. Approx 5.5 miles hiking round
trip, starting at 5500’ elevation and up to Mt
Elijah at about 6500’.
