info@trackersnw.com TrackersNW is proud to host Jon Young, storyteller & teacher... Coyote Mentoring is legendary. With epic tales of tracking, survival, awareness and ghost like warriors passed down from a lineage of mentors and teachers. As Trackers Cascadia thrives and breathes by its people collaborating and relearning to live, we recognize the many different paths as humans returning to the natural world. The many ways to rewilding. TrackersNW respects and supports the evolving work of this ancient tradition. In the Coyote Teaching tradition of the master of apprentice, Jon Young began his journey as one of Tom Brown Jr's first students. Jon continued this lineage through many decades of mentoring and training some of the best trackers and naturalists in the country, while bringing together famous learning communities such as the Wilderness Awareness School and RNDA. There will be limited room in this seminar, so register soon @ Tony Deis, 503.453.3038, trackersnw.com Who All Ages *childcare available at the same location Bird Language: Epic stories of ancient trackers The tracker waits perfectly still. No motion, slight breath. She knows the fox moves through the dark shadows, leaving room for the coyote who often walks along the edge of field and forest. The wren alarms for him, revealed the fox moves on to hunt elsewhere. The passing of every animal leaves its mark not only through tracks, but through the call of the birds. Every skilled tracker understands, you know the Cougar not through its prints, but through a crash of Wren and Sparrow alarms cutting through the forest like an arrow. You give the Bear berth from a wave of ground birds complaining as it lumbers through the woods. And you catch the sneaking Deer by a single Stellars Jay, offended and confused, cursing by the Buck's slow crouch and crawl. This is a night of storytelling, lore and wisdom for the birder, naturalist, and anyone wishing to understand the ebb of flow of the natural world through incredible competencies of the native tracker. Hosted by the TNW's Cascadia Tracking Guild, Jon Young gives you the foundations of Bird Language and other feats of tracking and nature awareness. This not a lecture, it is storytelling in its finest form. It is learning through the campfire and a first step into a entirely new world of connecting to nature. We hope to tune your senses to the various “shapes of bird language". Like ripples when a pebble is thrown in a pond, the songs, calls and alarms become concentric rings of movement and that ripple across the landscape. Understanding why birds alarm and how to respect their territory and behavior helps you walk through the woods without disturbing them. This in turn allows you to see more wildlife. If you've never experienced "bird language" you cannot miss this opportunity to learn form the very best. While there will be a separate care option ($5 additional with advanced registration, $10 at the door) parents are also welcome to have their child attend Jon's talk. If you choose we do ask that parents be accountable for watching their own child and help us maintain the quality of learning experience for everyone involved. The option of child care involves kids being watched in a nearby space by TrackersKIDS program leaders. They may take a sunset hike in nearby Oaks Bottom, meet the reptiles and furry critters living in the Scout Pit, and learn super kung fu skills.
