PPG meeting Aug 17 for aquaponics

Event
When:
Monday, August 17, 2009 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Would you like to...

  • grow food organically but you are limited on space?
  • use areas where the soil may be unhealthy to grow in?
  • get more agriculture in a city covered in concrete and asphalt?

Aquaponics is a technique that can help bring organic food production to challenging areas.

Aquaponics is a soilless system that connects two ecosystems into one low energy input, high yielding system. In this presentation we will learn how to grow food organically and without soil by using aquaponics. Aquaponics offer a great tool for urban areas that are limited in available grow space, have degraded or polluted soil conditions, and where we only have a short the amount of time on a site. Learn how these systems combine the raising of fish culture (aquaculture) and hydroponics (soilless agriculture) into a closed loop ecosystem that produces both vegetables and fish protein. Aquaponics can offer cities the ability to eat locally while not expanding our agricultural lands into the remaining wilderness thus preserving our zone 5 areas. Aquaponics is yet another permaculture tool for turning developed areas into sustainable living spaces.
