Event
When:
Wednesday, February 3, 2010 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Wednesday February 3rd - Gardening When It Counts Reading Circle

Chapter 9 - What To Grow and How To Grow It

Rather than having a specific outline this month, please bring your questions or comments from the chapter for discussion.  (Remember this chapter is 84 pp long - it will take you a while to get through it, especially if you are using it to help choose what veggies you want to grow this year!)  We will spend approximately 1 hour on the chapter.  The second hour will be preparing our seed order.  Please remember to bring sufficient funds for your order, with a bit extra to chip in for postage.

Gardening When It Counts by Steve Solomon is about how to grow a sustenance garden under less-than-ideal conditions, for example if you are not able to irrigate your crops.  He rates crops on how easy they are to grow, and tells you how to be successful with each kind.  There is information about how to start a new garden or restart an old one, how to work with only hand tools (no gas/electricity), what to look for or look out for when buying plants and seeds, how to water or grow (mostly) without watering, how to make good compost, and what to do about many diseases and pests.  His focus is on self-sufficient gardening for the coming hard times - a compelling message!

After February there will be 3 chapters left on watering, making compost, and insects/diseases that we will probably go through in order to finish the book by May at the latest.
